Figure 2.1 The Wild Robot Poster

"The Wild Robot"
Production Company: DreamWorks Animation
Artist: Peter Brown's
Year: 2024
Size: 60.9 cm x 40.6 cm
Medium: Digital art

Rationale: I chose digital art for selected artwork/design because I'm not really into fine arts like paintings and sculptures, especially abstract art. The nature of abstract is complicated and doesn't contain recognizable objects, so there is nothing to grasp or hold onto. In today's world, digital art is accepted as a legitimate art form to convey emotions, tell stories, challenge norms, and provoke thought.

The story follows Roz, a service robot shipwrecked on an uninhabited island who must adapt to its surroundings, build relationships with the local wildlife, and become the adoptive.

The robot in the center looks different from other high-tech robots. It has a round, friendly design, the glowing yellow eyes of the robot, and also the warmth of the fox contrast against the dark forest background. So make the composition well-balanced by drawing the attention to the central characters and making the natural environment to frame without overwhelming the main subjects (Contrast & Balance). Additionally, the fox and bird touching the robot show a mix of nature and technology. Their positioning and lightning draw the viewer's eye toward this moment of emotional connection (Emphasis). Furthermore, the title "THE WILD ROBOT" is placed in large, bold, texture letters near the top, making it the most dominant element after the characters (Hierarchy).

Task 2 - Visual Analysis & Ideation

Year: 2024
Size: 60.9 cm x 40.6 cm
Medium: Digital art

Visual Analysis
Phase 1: Observation
The poster is created in a portrait format, with a minimalist, text centric design, and prioritizing typography to convey thematic contrasts and emotionally engaging composition. The upper section of the composition, placement of "DreamWorks" and "Lupita Nyong'o" creates a balanced hierarchy of information. Additionally, the tagline underneath, there were additional elements of the release date is clearly visible.

The warmth of the fox interacts with the glowing yellow eyes of the robot contrasting against the darker background, emphasizing its presence with the poster title displayed centrally in a rough, textured yellow font, making it feel that it aligns with the theme of background. (103 words)

Phase 2: Analysis
The artwork composition well-balanced by drawing the attention to the central characters and making the natural forest environment with warm and cool tones to frame without overwhelming the main subjects (Contrast & Balance). Additionally, the fox and bird touching the robot show a mix of nature and technology. Their positioning and lightning draw the viewer's eye toward this moment of emotional connection (Emphasis). Last but not least, the title "THE WILD ROBOT" is placed in large, bold, texture letters near the top, making it the most dominant element after the characters (Hierarchy). (91 words)

Phase 3: Interpretation
The Wild Robot, created and directed by Chris Sanders (Lilo & Stitch, How to Train Your Dragon) obtain critical reception from famous publications, such as the movie performing a sly, absorbing, and effective storytelling (The Guardian), also adapted from Peter Brown's novel, computer-generated extravaganzas clogging up the animated zoological canon. This is a work that cares most about two (2) things: feeling and great beauty (New York Times).

For the poster, it shows the connection between the robot and the wild nature environment, with a peaceful and emotional scene when a robot is lying on the ground in a lush forest. In addition, it conveys exploring the goal of artificial intelligence adapting to the real world, self-discovery, and forming surprising connections. The more time we spend with the robot, the more its programming trains on new input to use the parlance of generative AI. (143 words)

4. Task 3 - Development & Design
10 Mar 2025 - 17 Mar 2025 (Week 6 - Week 7)

Figure 2.6 The Wild Robot Poster (Final)
<Justin Cleon_The Wild Robot_Task 3>

Rationale:
The design composition balances structured asymmetry to convey exploring the film’s theme of nature and technology with heavy typography and organic texture below that balances the lighter at top. This creates a dynamic tension, symbolizing the robot’s journey in a chaotic natural world.

The reason I decided on this design is because it showcases the contrast and connection between technology and nature, all set against a deep blue night sky with a glowing full moon. Centering the robot and the wildlife together in front of a bright huge moon visually emphasizes and hierarchy refers to meeting two (2) worlds: the mechanical (robot) and the natural (fox, forest animals). The robot appears tall, while the animals are shown in smaller but proportional scale. Additionally, the robot’s pointing gesture creates a movement that guides our eyes from left to right. This will help the viewer's attention moving across the artwork, as it is about the robot’s journey.

Last but not least, to enhance the word and images principles, I used speckled starry backgrounds in repetition, which help unify the composition and create a cohesive atmosphere to ensure that the space has a sense of fullness and ties the entire design together. Besides that, I utilized the more organic or hand-crafted style that could hint at natural elements with a mechanical elements part, improving the overall aesthetic and narrative of the design.

5. Reflection

What have I learnt in this module?
Overall, design principles are essential because they create the structure and foundation of a design, helping to communicate messages more effectively, and lead to better user experience. Therefore, I have acquired knowledge about various of the design principles and properly applying the principles through our artwork.

What did I enjoy the most?
Since the first class, I have really enjoyed the process of completing each task. However, I enjoyed Task 1 the most when I needed to research meaning from each of the design principles because I have gained a better understanding from there and improved my skills.

What did I not enjoy the most?
When I made the sketches for Task 2, it was quite challenging for me because my drawing skills are not great. As a result, my sketches are not as good as the others.

What have I learnt about myself through this module?
Through this module, it taught and encouraged me to be able to better express what I want to apply to the artwork. I was amazed because I expected that I would make it worse. However, I was able to create a not so bad artwork although the artwork I chose for references is really difficult.

What has changed and what has not in my learning journey?
Since this module is in a short semester, I realized I don't have much time to carry out my work because I only have 7 weeks to complete this module. Therefore, I must manage my time wisely, but sometimes I am always procrastinating even in simple assignments and that's not good or negatively impacts our mental and physical health.

What are my aspirations?
We reveive feedback, which helps us view things from a broader perspective. I've noticed that even with the same assignment, everyone creates unique outcomes based on their creativity. Therefore, the knowledge and feedback that I have gotten from this learning experience, even though it is not immediately applicable, may prove that it is valuable.
