Task 2 :
Express typographically the content in this link in a 2-page editorial spread (200mm x 200mm per page). No images are allowed (unless permitted). However, some very minor graphical elements, i.e. line, shade, etc. might be allowed.

Utilising the knowledge gained in the exercises and from other modules in the same semester, using Adobe InDesign to typographically compose and express the text within the given size. Use Adobe Illustrator to create the headline expression should feel the need to do so. However, the final layout (text formatting and layout) is to be completed in Adobe InDesign. Explore several options in expression and layout (sketches). Execute a good layout, with an expressive and appropriate headline in line with the spirit/message of the text.

Marking Criteria
The typographic expression has been explored in great variety and creatively.
•The expression conceptually and typographically communicates the meaning being conveyed.
•The textual information is extremely well formatted (font size, line-length, leading, alignment, cross alignment, reading rhythm, information hierarchy, widows and orphans).
•The layout and composition is suitable, impactful, memorable, and engaging.

Learning Goal
To demonstrate the use of Grids, layouts and page flow.
To apply the necessary skills and sensibilities for effective typographic communication and achieve good reading rhythm with memorability.

Timeframe

2. Task 2

Research

Figure 2.1 Source: Pinterest

I started by searching for examples of the words "code" for the headline. I already chose "a Code to Build On and Live by" for this task 2 by using Pinterest to help me get an inspiration idea.

Sketches

Figure 2.2 Sketches

Here are 4 sketch concepts:
#1 For my first design shows making an element of barcode or code into the words.
#2 The second design shows an elegant headline because it barcodes or code into "O"
      and "D" words.
#3 The third design transforms the letters into elements of a barcode or code.
#4 The last design makes the design of change the word "O" to number "0".

Layout Sketches
After I finished making the design for the headline on Adobe Illustrator, I tried to make some of the different layout.
From 4 layout sketches, I made 3 more to know which ones are the better and better. There is the layout:

3. Feedback

Week 6
General Feedback: Overview of Task 2, which is the exercise on text formatting & type expression using Adobe InDesign & Adobe Illustrator.

Specific Feedback: Mr. Max checks the 6 different layouts of Exercise 2 and chooses layout 1 as the best. Also, explains Task 2 for Text Formatting & Expression.

Week 7
General Feedback: Mr. Max reviews the digitization of the sketches for Task 2.

Specific Feedback: Even though there were some problems needed to fix the sketches and then Overall, Mr. Max accepted all of the sketches.

Week 8
General Feedback: Unfortunately, for this week I didn't consult because of independent learning week.

Specific Feedback: Unfortunately, for this week I didn't consult because of independent learning week.

So on week 9, I consulted Mr. Max to review and feedback my layout design. Overall, the layout design is fine and good.

4. Reflection

Experience
My experience with Task 2 was really enjoyable for me, especially working with Type Expression. For example, creating words that express their meanings through typography was very fascinating. And the learning process also includes formatting text and paragraphs, and arranging pictures to make the content look appealing and creating something that people would enjoy reading about.

Observation
For observation, the process involves asking Mr. Max to review my work. Additionally, some feedback and comments from other friends have helped me to improve and for me to complete the assignments.

Findings
Overall for Task 2, for me, the extensive knowledge and the information that I have gotten about Typography. While making comments about design elements might seem straightforward, however, deeper understanding shows the complexity and depth of the subject. The knowledge that I have gotten from this learning experience is that, even though it is does not immediately applicable, it may prove that it is valuable.

5. Further Reading

The key aspects of typography including font size, line spacing (leading), character spacing (kerning and tracking), and paragraph alignment. Proper use of tabs, indents, and paragraph spacing makes it look more appealing visually. For example such as, special formatting techniques, such as drop caps and typographer quotes, this creates a more to a polished look. Typography balances aesthetics with functionality to make documents that are not only visually appealing but also easy to read and to understand.
