Lecture (Week 4) : Introduction to Adjustment Layers & Filters
What is Adjustment Layer?
Adjustment Layers are non-destructive image editing tools in Photoshop. These layers add color and tonal adjustments to images without permanently changing the original pixels. This allows for editing and discarding changes or restoring the original image at any time, making the workflow in Photoshop more flexible and efficient.
How Adjustment Layers work:
• Add an Adjustment Layer to the image
• A new layer appears above the image
• A Properties panel opens for that adjustment type
• Changes in the Properties panel modify the image
Key Adjustment Layers:
1. Brightness / Contrast
• Changes the overall light and dark areas
• Brightness affects highlights
• Contrast affects shadows
2. Levels
• Adjusts shadows, midtones, and highlights
• Widely used for image correction
3. Curves
• Allows adjustments across the entire tonal range
• Very precise and powerful editing tool
4. Exposure
• Uses three sliders: Exposure, Offset, and Gamma
• Exposure changes highlights
• Offset changes midtones
• Gamma changes dark tones
5. Selective Color
• Changes one primary color without affecting others
What is Filter?
Filters are important tools in Photoshop for editing photos. These tools can:
• Change colors in images
• Add blur effects
• Create new visual effects
Photoshop has so many filters that users can do almost anything wanted to photos. This makes Photoshop a powerful tool for changing and improving pictures in many ways.
2. Practical : Digital Collage (Adjustment Layers & Filters)
For Adjustment Layers and Filters, I created two versions: one colorful with enhanced details and contrast, and one in black and white. For the first one, I used Levels and Curves, and for the second one, I applied the Black & White adjustment.

3. Reflection
For this practical, the adjustment layers & filters is quite challenging because if you make a small mistake it impacts the design, such as if too many adjustments will make unnatural, while too little will make the design regular or flat. Adjustment layers and filters are also really essential skills to learn because these features we can make the design better than before.
