Lecture (Week 6) : Poster Design

Figure 1.1 Poster Design

The 7 Principles of Poster Design:

Figure 1.2 Emphasis

1. Emphasis
The principles of design are rules to create effective and attractive compositions.

2. Balance and Alignment
Design principles serve as guidelines for creating effective and attractive compositions.

Figure 1.4 Contrast

3. Contrast
Contrast makes a design "pop" and stick in memory. The background should be different from element colors for better readability.

Figure 1.5 Repetition

4. Repetition
Using two typefaces or three colors creates natural repetition, which strengthens design.

Figure 1.6 Proportion

5. Proportion
Proportion is about the size and weight of elements and their relationships. Breaking down the design into sections helps understand it better.

Figure 1.7 Movement

6. Movement
Movement guides the eye from one element to the next, helping communicate information.

Figure 1.8 White Space

7. White Space
White space is the empty area surrounding design elements. Simply giving elements more breathing room can make a design successful.

2. Exercise 1 (Basic)
For the task for exercise 1 is quite simple, just using the brush without masking will get the work done. So therefore, I think this task is to make us more familiar with the brush tool, especially with different sizes, hardness, eraser tools to remove something that has excessive brushes. We also just blend mode (overlay/soft light) to control the colour, lightning, and texture.

3. Exercise 2 (Advanced)
The task for exercise 2 is a bit more advanced and challenging compared to the first one. The hair is very textured and the portrait is more complex. So, we must use "Quick Selection Tool", refine edge judge tool to ease selection in "Select & Mask", and so on. That's why we cannot simply use brushes and erasers only.

4. Reflection
For this practical exercise, it's quite challenging and I finished it because it has 3 parts of the task and only 1 week to finish it. But during the process, while watching the video tutorial really helped me to do this practical exercise, especially in some parts, I was confused. At this time, I realized that always learning and practicing is essential and more important than any skill out there.
