Lecture : The Bezier
Game
Figure 2.1 Source: The Bezier Game
These are the resources from Google Classroom
and various videos about Adobe Illustrator.
Next, this is an assigned a challenge called the
Bézier Game to practice and improve using the pen tool
in Adobe Illustrator for
tasks/exercises/assignments.
Lecture : Vormator
Challenge
This is the task of creating a character using 8
given shapes. The challenge limits participants to
a set of pre-defined shapes, with the goal of
creating a unique character by combining and
manipulating these shapes while adhering to
specific rules. The rules stipulate that
stretching or squishing the shapes is not allowed;
any changes must alter the shape itself. This
challenge requires some thought and
creativity.
Lecture : Pathfinder & Shape Builder Tools
This is how to create shadows using the
Pathfinder and Shape Builder tools for the
Vormator challenge. Additionally, extra credit is
available for using these tools.
Lecture : Color & Gradient
And this is how to use Adobe Color for
searching color references or themes, and
customizing them to make gradient meshes.
Gradients can create light and shadow effects
after shape construction using the Pathfinder
and Shape Builder tools
3. Exercises 1 -
Vormator
Research
Figure 3.1 Source: Pinterest
First of all, I do some research on Pinterest to get ideas and about what character I want to make for the vormator challenge. And then I found this picture on Pinterest, so I wanted to make a pile like those in the pictures.
Digitilization
I experimented with combining different shapes to create
coherent designs. For the octopus, I used the badge shape.
However, I struggled with the robot, finding it challenging to
combine the jerk shape and the drop shape with the badge shape.
This became even more complicated when I tried flipping the
badge shapes because the pointy part was above.
After that, I rotated the bar shapes to make the robot. I
suddenly got ideas to make cute robots (Baymax, Eilik robot
& Emo robot). So I made a hand robot with flash power. Last
but not least, there is the rabbit on top. I was trying hard to
think about that, and after doing some research, I found a cute
rabbit, so I wanted to make it with a power button for a little
decoration. And I was speechless and so lucky because when I
made the rabbit using the drop shape and flipped it, and it
suddenly created legs between the octopus and robot to make them
look good.

For extra credit, I created some shadows using Shape Builder
and Pathfinder tools. I added shadows to all designs (rabbit,
robot, and octopus) and their background.
4. Exercises 2 - Composition
Research
Figure 4.1 Source: Pinterest
First, I do some research on Pinterest to find
environmental inspiration that matches the previously
created character. This is so it can spark ideas for a
midnight beach scene with a beautiful aurora.
Sketches

Figure 4.4 Robo's Moonlight #2
One special night, the sky on the beach turned
into a magical show. Beautiful green called the
aurora surrounds and dances above on that dark
beach with a thousand stars in the sky. The big,
round moon glowed softly like a nightlight in the
sky while birds swopped and soared beneath
it.
A small, adorable robot named Robo stood on the
beach. His eyes shone brightly with a sparkle and
some might think being alone would make him sad
and lonely, but not him!
Awesome! said Robo, dancing with delight. These
are the most incredible things that I’ve ever
seen! His metal body shimmered under the colorful
lights in the sky.
Even though he was only himself on the beach that
night, Robot felt like the most joyful robot
throughout the entire world.
5. Reflection
For Task 1, it was really fun and easy because it felt like playing puzzles and just putting together by combining shapes. However, I needed more time to figure out which character to create at the beginning and just had to keep experimenting with the shapes. This exercise was very useful in encouraging creativity within the limitation of simple shapes, yet the outcome could still result in a variety of designs
For Task 2, I needed to ensure that the character had good composition with the background. However, I spent a lot of time thinking about which theme would match the character. At first, I wanted to go with an outer space theme, but in the end, I chose a beach theme because it was simpler and easier to work with than combining colors for outer space.
